MAZ 215

The rolling Stock of Baranavichy Bus Depot OJSC was replenished by 2 flagships of MAZ city buses line on New Year’s Eve.

The bus was first introduced in 2011. The brand new model then attracted the attention by the length and the number of doors. The overall length of the bus is the maximum allowed 18,75 m., and the number of doors — 5 (instead of 4 in the traditional “bellows”). Since Baranavichy still had no deliveries of second generation buses (2 MAZ 206, used in the suburbs, do not count), the supply of 2 modern articulated buses can be attributed to the fact, that the production of earlier purchased MAZ 105 apparently ceased.

The tender post for 2 buses appeared on the site of public procurement on November 18 this year. December 30, 2014 yellow buses arrived on the territory of the bus depot.

In Baranavichy bus depot every seventh bus is Ikarus. The arrival of New MAZes means for them only one thing — utilization.

There is about one dozen of Ikaruses in bus depot today.

In 2005, the depreciation of rolling stock of the bus depot was 70-75%, while today it is reduced to 42-43%. To buy a new “accordion”, the bus depot needs to spend 1,5 billion rubles.

Bus depot already received ten new buses MAZ 105 this year, but for complete replacement of Ikaruses seven more is needed. If the program of new buses supply will be completed till the end of the year, no Ikaruses will probably remain in Baranavichy. This is because of their mileage already reached 2-3 million kilometers, while their resource is 588 thousand.

No one wishes to buy thirty-year-old buses, though the bus depot will be happy to sell them. According to bus depot administration there is also no sense to maintain one of the buses as the retro bus: “To keep this bus is not economically viable: city tours for school children are organized only 1-2 times a month”.

So, the bus, which faithfully worked since the middle 80'th, is sent for disassembly. The bus first loses components that will be used later, for example, a punch. And then the bus is sent to the shop. There the nodes and components which can be used on other Ikaruses are removed and stored. For example, tyres, the resource of which is about 80 thousand kilometers, and batteries that must work for 2 years. Then the bus taken to a special area for the complete disassembly. In two weeks, it turns into a sorted scrap. The containers for metal storage (a separate for black and color) are filled with details of the bus. During the six months 10-12 vehicles follow the procedure.

Benefit from scrapping for the bus depot is very small: metal from the seven-ton bus costs about ten million rubles.

Drivers admit it is hard to part with buses: “Ikarus — a technique! It is soft, easy to maintain, and the stove in the cabin is not abuzz”, — shares impressions Hryhory Patotski, who spent 15 years driving Ikarus. But he is also pleased with the new vehicles: MAZes are faster and more easy to handle.

Several years ago the streets of the city were full of frisky “Ikaruses”. Today, these distinguished veterans inferior positions for new and modern buses made in Belarus. A few days ago the bus depot was replenished by new MAZes — the buses of increased capacity, or “accordions” as they are called by local people.

The cost of purchase is 15,6 billion rubles. Funds for the purchase came from the budget.

— The purchase of MAZes allowed to decommission ten “Ikaruses”, which worked in the city for more than twenty years, — tells the director of the bus depot Uladzimir Puchko. — Purchase of new equipment will allow to save on maintenance fund about 23 million rubles monthly. According to our estimates, the number of buses leaving the route will decline for about one-quarter, which in monetary terms is more than ten million savings per month.

For passengers, this means that the bus of the desired route will arrive at the bus stop just in time, and will not go to the depot because of breakage.

Today all ten buses already work hard carrying residents and visitors of the city. As the chief of brigade no. 1 Dzmitry Radchanka (pictured above) told, the new “harmonies” will be especially involved at the busiest passenger routes — passing through the city center, going to Barauki.

Brigadier of urban routes drivers Viktar Fiodarau asked the opinion of colleagues on new buses. First reviews are very positive.

— In this model of MAZes was significantly changed controlling system, — says Viktar Fiodarau. — It has become more comfortable that facilitates driver's work. And also passengers will enjoy the new buses: they are more comfortable, warm (there is a possibility to turn on the heating), they have more space.

— MAZes have proved themselves with the good side, — continues the chief of brigade no. 1 of bus depot Dzmitry Radchanka. — They are equipped with reliable engines that are easy to start even in the frosty weather.

All new buses are equipped with electronic displays inside and outside the cabin. As noted in the bus depot, it allows passengers to see the number of the bus from a distance, and inside the cabin — to monitor the approach of the desired bus stop.

— New buses — it’s a great pleasure for not only for our company, but especially for the passengers, — says Uladzimir Puchko. — I would like in the name of entire team to thank for this valuable and welcome gift to Brest Regional Executive Committee and personally the Governor Kanstantsin Sumar, Head of Finance Depratment Ivan Vabishchevich, Baranavichy City Executive Committee and personally the Chairman Viktar Dzichkouski, Head of Finance Department Natallya Fiodarava. Many thanks for the attention and help that they are giving to our company for socially important passenger transportation. The new buses will create a comfortable and safe environment for passengers traveling — the citizens and quests of the city.

It should be noted that over the past five years the company has significantly updated its fleet: for own funds of the bus depot more than 50 vehicles were purchased. So the veterans of urban transportation — “Ikaruses” — will soon be seen only in old photographs.

Recently, in the bus depot there was another pleasant event: the mechanical car wash was commissioned after reconstruction. Uladzimir Puchko proudly notes, that there is no such car washes in the city, and in the country is unlikely to find worthy competitors.

— The equipment consists of two gantry wash of German company “WashTec”, as well as the equipment for waste water treatment, — tells the director of the company Uladzimir Puchko. — The installed equipment allows washing of any vehicles — cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment. We hope that this service will be popular among enterprises in the city and the region, and this will allow us to earn at least an additional 350 million rubles a year.

The Chief of Production Department of Bus Depot Siarhei Dubeshka showed the reporters of “Nash Krai” a new wash, where at this time a truck was washed. Within minutes, the car loses the dirt accumulated over many months and comes out of the building of car wash noticeably refreshed, with sparkling clean metal parts.

— Active foam, shampoo and wax is used for washing vehicles, — says Siarhei Dubeshka. — The following year drying will be also added, in order the vehicle went out of car wash almost dry.

It is noteworthy that the car wash is very economical in the use of water. Moreover, two-thirds of used water after cleaning is reused. This is the good owner’s approach.

According to company director Uladzimir Puchko, completion of all works on the reconstruction of car wash is planned for next year. However, for this must be found about 1,2 billion rubles. Funds are needed for thermal rehabilitation of buildings, roof repair, installation of ventilation, and equipment for drying cars.

Bus fleet mechanic Siarhei for ten years dismantle old Ikaruses

Bus depot already received ten new buses MAZ 105 this year and expects a further seven.

The scrapped bus will bring into bus depot budget relatively small amount — about ten million rubles.

The place where the buses are dissembled is called “scrap collection site”. Inside, a bit like operating room. Drivers of Ikaruses told: after so many years spent together it is hard to part with the bus.

For the first time in Belarus, the system of single electronic tickets for all types of public transport will be implemented in Baranavichy, BelTA learned from the Acting Head of Operations Department of Information Systems of the republican unitary enterprise “Information Centre of the Aircraft” (Bel. — республиканское унитарное предприятие «Информационно-вычислительный центр авиации»), which is involved in the project, Vital Shkuratau (Bel. — Віталь Шкуратаў).

Development of a system common travel document for travel by public transport in Belarus has already begun. Such a ticket would be a contactless plastic card. Passengers will be able to use it in buses, trolleybuses, trams, subway. When making travel a user applies e-card to a special electronic composter, and the balance is subtracted depending on the distance or travel time. This will take into account the mode of transport and route, the source said. The use of the e-ticket will be at the entrance and exit of vehicles. If the balance on the card will be zero, the passenger will be able to pay the fare by buying a ticket from the driver of transport.

All electronic composters will be connected by a special system whereby staff can monitor all movements of passengers. The card balance will can be filled up by replacing it with another at the box office, or adding the ballance in the self-service terminals, a network of which will be specially build during the project.

It is expected that in the coming years, the system of single electronic ticket for travel by public transport will cover all the major Belarusian cities. And the first such pilot project will be implemented in Baranavichy. “By the end of 2013 we should fully implement and test such a system in this city, — said Vital Shkuratau. — Then the new system will cover all public transport of the country, and in the future — share taxis, domestic long-distance transportation.”

When designing a new system of Belarusian specialists use leading European experience, including Russia. The project will be using domestic developments, including software.

As reported, the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance, the regional executive committees and Minsk City Executive Committee prepare proposals for the establishment of differentiated fare pay in public transport as a function of distance (time) of travel. The project will allow to organize a differentiated fee depending on the distance (time) of travel, ensure payment of travel with modern banking technology (SMS-banking, internet banking, bank cards, plastic), encourage use of reusable electronic travel documents by a greater number of passengers. In addition, it is planned to improve the collection of payment of public transport through a flexible system of payment for travel, improve return on public transport.

On Saturday, February 12, 2011 in Baranovichi on four oversized low-bed trailers arrived the first electric multiple unit Flirt made by Swiss company Stadler Bussnang AG. The contract to supply 10 such trains worth 6 million euro each for the Belarusian Railways was signed last year. Six trains are designed for passenger service in the Belarusian capital within the project “City Lines” (so-called “new format” of railway transportation), according to which it is supposed to link the center of Minsk with its suburbs and in the future with satellite cities. Four trains will operate on regional routes, so there is every reason to believe that in Baranovichi Flirt will be a frequent visitor. The novelty, which speeds up to 160 km/hour, is designed for 550 passengers and is equipped with 200 seats. Due to the fact that the track width in Europe is different from Belarus, it was decided to transport “EMU” by the road. To assemble the train and make its preoperational preparation was selected the locomotive depot Baranovichi.

At the end of September 2010 the city press reported about the plans of bus station building (built in 1986-1988) demolition as well as clearing the surrounding area, which means the demolition of seven houses on the Thalmann, Kutuzov and Zyalenaya (Green) streets together with the trade pavilions by the bus station building and the market area near it. On the cleared area multifunctional complex that includes a new bus station building on 1000 square meters with a landing platform for 13 buses, shopping center with bowling, disco club and restaurant with approximately 100 seats will be built. Thalmann street near the bus station is planned to expand to six (!) lanes. On the city web sites lively debates flared up at once. The subject of it was not even the reasoning of bus station multifunctional complex construction (with the constantly diminishing passenger traffic on the suburban lines and the mass of unsolved problems for example in the sphere of city healthcare), but plans of demolishing of the drug clinic building built in 1895 during clearing and rebuilding the landside area. It was built as an apartment house (whose premises were rented), and later, during the World War II was the residence of German officers, and after the war it played the role of the cinema, and is currently the drug clinic .

On 7th October 2009 Minsk Automobile Plant introduced to the journalists the new model of the second generation bus MAZ 205. This is articulated fully low-floor bus of extremely big class, which is designed to carry the passengers on charged city lines. The model was introduced to general public during the international specialized exhibition of passenger transport “BUSWORLD EUROPE – 2009”, which was held on 16th – 21st October in Kortrijk (Belgium). Although the official press release says that the idea to create such bus was born only in March of 2008 and that “it took only about half a year to realize the project after first scheme”, we do think that MAZ 205 became quite self-consistent continuation of Minsk second generation city buses model line, which was started in 2005 by solo 12-meter MAZ 203, and the idea to create MAZ 205 came to the mind of bus branch constructors hardly later then prototype of MAZ 203 bus was assembled.

MAZ 205 (photomontage of JSC Minsk Automobile Plant)

The introduced bus is the longest of all passenger MAZ. It is 18,75 m long (more than 2 meters longer then the familiar articulated Ikarus 280 and almost a meter longer then the predecessor MAZ 105), and 2,55 m width. In the peak hours the bus can transport 175 passengers, including 39 sitting.

The new bus has a good ergonomics of driver’s working place, the dashboard is Siemens-VDO. Vision of the road meets all modern requirements in the field of bus construction. Taking into consideration the big length of the bus, to ensure safety during maneuvering, opening and closing doors, a prototype bus is equipped with video cameras, information from which comes on the screen, located on the driver’s working place. The prototype of MAZ 205 is equipped with environment-friendly engine Mercedes (Euro 5), which allows to offer a new bus even for the EU countries consumers. To ensure optimum microclimate for the prototype bus the sliding-type air vents are used, air conditioner installed. Heating during the cold season provides convector and cabin heaters. In the spacious cabin, which, though considerably "heavier" because of the bulk shaft of the engine, comfortable passenger seats are set. The machine is equipped with all necessary equipment for the passage of people with disabilities (there is a folding ramp, upholstered backrest to secure the wheelchair in the cabin of the bus).

The main advantages of urban bus of especially large class MAZ 205 compared with the predecessor MAZ 105 are: fully low-floor construction and an enlarged passenger capacity. In addition was kept a "pulling" layout where the engine is located in front of the bus. This solution allows to make the construction cheaper, abandoning the expensive imported node junction, to improve bus manageability on the slippery road sections, which is especially important for the operation of bus in urban environments. For many elements bus model MAZ 205 is unified with other machines of the second generation — MAZ 203 and MAZ 206, which are already quite familiar to Belarusian and foreign consumers.

According to the official press release, “MAZ 205 bus embodies the latest developments in the field of design, comfort, safety and economy. As for the design, many will enjoy the bus, here is difficult to find anything fault: the appearance is maintained in accordance with current trends of “bus mode”. Comfort will depend primarily on the configuration, which will order the immediate buyers.

Taking into account the fact that in Baranavichy has not yet appeared on the city bus lines even the second generation MAZ 203 bus, the first prototype of which was introduced back in 2005, is hard to expect the appearing of a new MAZ 205 in the city earlier than in the middle of the next years decade.

November 9, 2009

On November 2 in Baranavichy after long-term break in the buses of general city lines conductors appeared. This innovation is a continuation of steps made by BrestVoblAutaTrans (Brest Region Automobile Transport) and its general manager Ananiy Ananyevich Khvastyuk (former director of bus park in Pinsk) directed to increasing of amount of passengers paying fare. In April of 2009 during the interview for „The Evening Brest” («Vyecherniy Bryest») Mr. Khvastyuk said the following: „Not everyone liked the Pinsk experience of conductors application on the city lines. For example, Brest gortrans (city transport — author) objects, but we will increase the amount of conductors in the buses.”

Now conductors in Baranavichy „inhabit” the line no. 26. The choice of the line isn’t accidental — 99 % of passengers of the shortest line form the employees of BSZ ZAO „ATLANT” (who probably are not used to know that the buses are not still factory and free of charge, but the city and have to be payed for), who ride from one final stop to another. So the conductors don’t have to stretch — they let the plant workers enter the slowly filling bus through the front door on the final stop...

We would like the conductors to be only unsuccessful experiment. If the aim of the innovation is the growth of passengers paying for the ride percentage, then we think that the more cheap and successful idea will be the growth of amount of controllers, enforced by the MIA officers, but not creation of the army of conductors, everyone of which has to be payed the salary. The percentage of „gatecrashers” in our city is not so high to recompense the conductor’s work.

October 26, 2009

On September, 23 2009 the session of town council of deputies was held. On the session the problems of transportation services for city population were discussed. During the discussion the following information was presented. Currently there are 240 bus stops in the city and 134 of them don’t conform the standards of city development (95 of them are not even illuminated). The speed of vehicles refreshing approached 11,6 % in 2007 and 8 % in 2008. As later the deputy chief of transportation service of PC Baranavichy Bus Park Yuryj Senko reported for the Intex-Press newspaper, according to the condition for October, 9 2009 13 buses for city lines and 2 buses for suburban were bought. Thereby the plan for refreshing for the present moment is accomplished approximately for 70 %. Till the end of the year the bus park is planning to buy 6 new machines more. New buses are bought at the expence of the own funds, inpayments from transport acquisition, and bank credits as well. As the nearest priority tasks for city authorities and the direction of bus park are named the following: the organization of transport for students of the new buildings of Baranavichy State University at Masherau ave. from the side of the route terminal “Sanatoium-Preventorium “Mahistralny”, the increasing of the amount of buses from the center of the city to the area of Parkavaya street and the provision of transport communication for the dwellers of the recent developments at Hayevaya street and Masherau avenue.

July 6, 2009

In the end of June 2009 the last white-green Nyeman 5256 (LiAZ 5256) was written off. After 16 years after purchase of the first bus in 1993 from the factory in Likino-Dulyevo the history of these buses in Baranavichy ended. When it turned out, that in addition to the last LiAZ/Nyeman were written off and were preparing to utilization two last city (ex-German) buses Ikarus 260, the authors of the page www.bartrans.net decided to try to influence their destiny, that's why we decided to write a letter to the director of Private Company Baranavichy Bus Park V. V. Puchko. V. V. Puchko liked the idea and we hope soon one of condemned Ikaruses will have the second life.

July 6, 2009

In the evening of June, 29 2009 there was a downpour in Baranavichy: during more than two hours, when inclement weather continued, there was 59 mm of precipitation in the city (almost twice a decade norm), besides natural phenomenon is considered as dangerous (or elemental), when during twelve hours there is 50 mm of precipitation. Because o this the serious problems for city public transport appeared. According to the head of transportation service of PC Baranavichy Bus Park Vitaly Kuretsky, because of weather conditions the time-table of city buses moved for 15-20 minutes. Mostly, the delay because of big puddles appearing in Fabrychnaya, Fralyankova, Kamsamolskata, Brestskaya and other streets.
