Baranavichy in 1978

Baranavichy — one of the industrial cities of Byelorussia, the center of Baranavichy rayon (district) of Brest voblast (region), important railway junction. In terms of population the city ranked eighth in the country.

In the past century on the site of the city there was a small village. With the construction of the Moscow—Warsaw railway near the village the station Baranavichy was built. When the second was built railway Vilnius—Rivne, the station became a hub. The rolling stock depots, business and residential accommodations began to appear here.

In Baranavichy took place the revolutionary actions of workers. In 1905–1914 the meetings and strikes of railway men were frequent. The active participation in the strikes took the employees of women's tailor workshops.

During the Great Patriotic War Baranavichy been one of the centers of partisan and underground movement in Byelorussia. Partisans undermined the enemy trains, blew up the railway and road bridges, liberated towns, thereby assisting the Red Army units.

On July 8, 1944 Moscow saluted the valiant troops of the 1st Byelorussian Front who had liberated Baranavichy.

In the postwar years the city has changed beyond recognition, has become one of the industrial and cultural centers of the country. Now in Baranavichy there are more than 50 industrial enterprises, transport and construction companies.

The city has the technical schools of light industry and technology, medical and music schools. Their leisure time residents of the city carry out in the theaters, cultural centers, clubs, on the stadiums. Those who want to learn about the history of the city can visit the local history museum. It collected 13 thousand exhibits, and widely presents the theme of the partisan movement.

Baranavichy in 1989

Baranavichy — is the the second largest city of Brest voblast (region).

The city has dozens of industrial enterprises. Among them — machine tool plants, the plant of automated lines, the plan of automotive units. Well known in the country and outside the production of cotton production association — calico, cotton, satin, muslin, flannel and other fabrics. A significant part of the production gives the food industry.

Situated between Brest and Minsk, Baranavichy is an important railway junction, where trains on six lines depart.

The public education is widely developed. In the city there are 5 technical schools, 4 vocational schools, 22 secondary schools.

During the Second World War the city was almost completely destroyed. The heroism of the Soviet people in the years is evidenced by the many monuments and mass graves.

Residents relate with care to the culture monuments. In one of them — Pakrouski (eng. — Pokrov) Cathedral — contains a unique mosaic compositions made according to designs by Russian artists V. Vasnetsov, A. Ryabushkin and other.

Today the city is growing rapidly and becomes prettier, its streets are improved and squares, appear new housing estates.
